well thats a very vague question...more common for civilian, fed agencies, or military, or lumping them all together and the most common caliber for allllll?

Popular? I'd add a poll to the thread.

Chambered, I'd take an educated guess and say .45 acp. My theory is based on all of the 1911 variants around.

Also, the .40 has only been around since 1990. (Wikipedia)

.45 acp was designed in 1904. (Wikipedia)

Right now, adding a 40 might be a good thing right now, as I'm always seeing boxes of it on the shelf almost everywhere, and I can't hardly get 9mm or 45. Just went shooting today, and won't be able to for a while as its taken a month to get my hands on 400 rnds of 9mm, and 259 of 45. Now down to 50 of each, which I'll be holding onto

As an interesting side note: My brother was talking to a few cops up in MD with different departments, and they were both carrying .45 cal Glocks and stated their departments were moving away from 9mm and 40 cals.

I'd go with the .45 Cal as most popular just because it's been around so long, But pretty much every major gun manufacturer out there makes sidearms chambered in both.

I think either one is Good, But got to give a slight nod to the .45 cal again.

Altough the .45ACP has been around longer, the .40S&W gained popularity quickly so as far as guns chambered for them are I'd say they're about the same. But for the actual number of guns manufactured in these calibers I'd say the .45 because it's been around longer, and its been the sidearm of a lot of armies through a lot of wars.

Probably .45 due to the 1911 lovers. (and I mean that in a good way!)

If you're making a buying decision, this shouldn't be considered though. Both are readily available in normal times. You need to look at what you want to use the firearm for.

9mm 1911's are coming on strong. You have very good control with one with even the hottest 9mm loads. A couple companies have shown that the 9mm out of a 1911 can be deadly accurate 50 yds out, as well. Just saying...
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

I work for a firearms and ammunition manufacturing company. We sell way more 45ACP than 40 S&W. We also sell more 9mm than 40 S&W. Usually when in gun shops, I saw all three pretty regularly available (before 14 December 2012).

On a side note, there is 9mm Luger ammo that has more energy than most 45ACP ammo.
