Unusual .22 Shotgun?
I was at an auction over the weekend, that had a single shot .22, it just looked like a very plain sears gun with light rust and a beat up stock. I didn't give it much thought until i ended up buying it. (for the sum of 15.00) When i got it home and cleaned it up, the barrel says, Ranger 101-8, .22 Shot. Theres nothing else, no serial numbers, no name brand, nothing. The bore is nice and shiny, but theres no rifling, and seems to be choked at the end of the barrel? I can't find anything at all about it, any thoughts?

Re: Unusual .22 Shotgun?
There used to be alot of those around when I wa a kid. The oldtimers called them pest, bird or garden guns and were used around here to defend your garden.
I have no idea what it is worth but it will be a blast when the grasshoppers get thick. Think bird hunting without having to clean.

Re: Unusual .22 Shotgun?
I dont know if it is the same kind that a friend of mine had or not, but HIS was not rifled... Like the other person said, it was meant for the 22 birdshot . He ( and I ) used it on his dad's farm to shoot sparrows and blackbirds that were roosting in the barn and eating from the silo... after about a week they decided it was NOT a good place to be and left...
Still sounds like ya got a good deal... just enjoy and be careful....

We used them in scout camp, not very effective- but fun.

Re: Unusual .22 Shotgun?
That sounds pretty neat. Everywhere I go I see .22LR shotshells, so I dont think youll have an issue finding ammo.

Re: Unusual .22 Shotgun?
My first initial thought was that for 15 bucks i was just going to clean it up and sell it for 60, but after i found out it was for shotshells there's no way i wanna get rid of it, it cleaned up great, stripped and sanded the stock yesterday, going to lay a dark mahogany finish on tonight and it should be a very presentable little gun

Re: Unusual .22 Shotgun?
I've been looking for one for a long time. I use a bolt action single shot now but it has rifling. The rifling makes the shot spread to wide. I'm going to try the ones with the plastic tops next. I heard they are used in the ones with rifling. They're good for about 15 yds. I have a lot of English sparrows trying to build nests under my porch roof each yr. Tried just about everything, I hate shooting the little things but it's going to have to be done. Tried a few shots but they must be smarter than the pellets cause I haven't hit one yet.
