Without quoting it to point it out, what's the word on the buffer tube? I thought that a pistol tube was required - something that could not have a stock slipped onto it.

There are quite a few different muzzle devices that work in a similar manner to push the blast forward.
Google "Linear Compensator"

The KAK Flash Can is popular because it is dirt cheap at $30 and seems to work adequately.
