Default New S&W J frame pro models

So it appears smith and wesson is producing new pro model j frames that use moon clips. I have a few questions regarding this, because I have no experience with moon clips..
    1) Must you use the moon clips all the time, or is it still possible to load the cartridges without the clips?
    2) What modifications where done to allow this?
    3) Is it possible for me to modify my current model 642 to use moon clips?

    1. depends on if its a rimmed or rimless cartridge. If rimmed, you will need to use the clips because you'll need the clip to main headspace. If rimless, and if the chambers are done properly, you wont need to use clips because it could headspace off the mouth - but you wont have any means of extraction.
    2. the cylinder was machined to accept them like there were done before.
    3. yes. a good revolver gunsmith will be able to machine your cylinder to use moon clips.
