Default Anyone interested in the new 17 Winchester Super Mag?

Apparently this has been in development for a few years and they're finally ready to release this spring.

It's getting a 20gr out of the muzzle at 3000fps using a rimfire cartridge. Also a 25gr at 2550 fps. Ballistics look way better than a 17hmr. They're using a heavier-duty rimfire cartridge loosely based on a nailgun cartridge. It uses a heavier striking pin than other .17s and .22s so you can't just swap barrels.

So far Savage has committed to making a rifle for this and a couple of others are supposedly developing one but names are not yet released. It should be interesting if it catches on and becomes readily available.

I read they're going to try to keep the price down on the ammo...does sound interesting though.

If ammo prices aren't outrageous and comparable to 22 mag before the frenzy, I would buy one. Especially if Marlin produces a rifle chambered in it.

Just read the article in Guns & Ammo yesterday. Sounds very interesting. I just wonder if there is just an over abundance of cartridges on the market. That it makes since to pick up a brand new out of the factory one.

well i guess the ammo situation dictates if i will buy one or not.... maybe they should give free ammo w/ purchase....

Volquartsen Customs is also going to make a 17 WSM this year. If anyone wants to let me borrow theirs, I'll write up a really nice review of it. And throw in forum rep points too.

Remember the 5mm remington? You will see the rifles at gun shows, cheap. Good luck getting ammo. What goes around, comes around, over and over again.
You don't have enough guns untill you don't know how many you have.

Maybe if it was a reloadable centerfire cartridge. But we already have the .17 hornet which reloadable, has more power and etc. Its neat but another caliber you are at the mercy of the ammo companies for.

Not sure where you have been, but there is new 5mm being produced.

I would opt for a 5mm, but I really don't want to buy a rifle from the 70s...I wished other companies would offer the 5mm.

    I don't know if I would get a 17WSM...I would prefer a larger/heavier bullet than the 17WSM.

I think that Winchester should have offered a larger bullet since it would have a huge advantage for hunters needing a rimfire that can take down coyote sized game. There is a huge market and I don't know if the 17WSM will deliver.

I'm into too many calibers as it is. I really don't need one more to try to find and stock.
