Default Visiting a friends home in upstate NY for a few days

So what can I arguably get away with taking to protect myself? A shotgun or rifle? A handgun? Because we will be doing some recreational shooting on my friends property. It is their secondary home upstate, they live here in PA.

I know it would have to be encased and unloaded of course. Any feedback is welcome.

I wouldn't take anything there... Myself included.
I have family and friends in N.Y. and N.J.. I won't even go there for weddings or funerals.

Honestly considering the new laws passed I wouldn't bring anything to NYS
Nearly everything is a potential assault weapon.

Handguns completely illegal, don't try it.
If you want to risk a long gun make sure it's as basic as possible.
Simple hunting rifle, or shotgun. No extended tubes or mags, or anything you wouldn't see your run of the mill fudd running around with during hunting season. Basic stock, no thumb holes, etc, etc, etc.

I assume your comment was in jest but, for completeness, not if it has a wrist brace:

    NYS Penal Law

§ 265.01 Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth
    degree when:
    (1) He or she possesses any firearm, electronic dart gun, electronic
stun gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal
knuckle knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, plastic knuckles,
metal knuckles, chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type
    slingshot
    or slungshot, shirken or "Kung Fu star";

    effective 3/16/13

    How fucking ridiculous.

    OP don't even go.
    Spend your $ elsewhere.
If your friends still want to visit NY let them go alone.

You can't take a firearm into NY with you, and while there you cannot even handle your friend's firearms if you don't have a NY state permit.

Can't bring any handguns or touch any while here for that matter. What kind of long guns are you looking at bringing?

Give 'em time... they're the next "assault" weapons.
