    Default Help identifying a rifle

Not sure if anyone can help with a black powder rifle ID, but I thought I'd throw this out there and see.

Bought this from a friend who needed some quick cash. This is a percussion cap rifle with brass inlay in the stock and the initials S.C.C. in the left side of the stock. The receiver plate below the action says " J & H Meachum & Co., Warranted". It is an octogon barrel and is actually in good shape. Trying to figure out what this is and its value (seeing if it was worth the cash or if I just helped out a friend) When I try to search for Meachum, the only thing that comes up is E. C. Meachum from St. Louist sure if anybody can help but here goes.

Thanks in advance! This is also posted over on the Firing Line black powder forum. If I get an answer there, I'll post it back here so folks know.

Any proof marks on the barrel?

The name on the lock isn't always who made the gun. Some companies would make locks to sell to other gun makers.

Unfortunately, no proof marks on the barrel. At the suggestion of a local gunsmith, I even removed the barrel to check the bottom. His thought was sometimes they put the proof mark on the underside. Still nothing there.
