Wink The Age Old Question- Which Caliber Is Better

I have seen these threads pop up on this board and it seems they always turn into some sort of circus.

    The 9mm is weak....45 rocks!
    .45 will kill a dragon, 9mm won't stop a fly!
    .40 beats them all!

    You get the point...

Anyway, these discussions are all well and good and really, it looks like there is no right or wrong answer...personal preference and what you can control...basically, shot placement. That's what I get out of it anyway.

The thing that all you people who are so caught up in the 9mm-.40-.45 debate seem to overlook...the thing we all seem to overlook...the real question we need the answer to...

    What is better:

    .177 or .22 pellets?

Let the debate begin, but I know this may become heated so please...in the name of peace...LET'S KEEP IT CIVIL FOLKS!!!!

    LOL! great pic Oracle...

Ok but I need to get to the bottom of this...which one has more stopping power? When confronted by an angry squirrel or field mouse, I want the one that's going to put them down...

Think of it like this, BB=FMJ .22 pellet=JHP

The pellet will have better wound inflicting capability than the BB.

However, there's no semi auto pellet guns IIRC, and in most cases, you have to manually load each pellet to be fired.

In regards to bb vs pellet...the bb will penetrate deeper but will not leave as big of a wound channel. If I were to hunt, it would be with a pointed pellet out of a break barrel 22 caliber, at least 700 fps. I would never hunt anything with a 177 under 800 fps. I've shot birds before (all 177) with a 1000 fps gun, and a 500 fps gun. The 1000 actually chronographs at 750 with the ammo I used, but didn't get to chrono the other. I'd assume a bit under the 500 its supposed to be. But anyway, the 100 sent feathers flying and dropped the bird instantly...the 500, both of them got away, one with two shots in him.

I think as long as you get a "high power" air gun, you'll be fine. Use pointed ammo. There are semi auto air guns, but the only one I can think of is the Crosman 1077. Personally, I don't feel that it would really be able to take much down much. I'd go with a 22 for hunting, if only for the more weight and bigger wound channel.
