That's a great article I read it a while ago. Great info for me, I learned a lot from it. But it does make you wonder if 2 out of 4 BM were unproperly staked...I believe this article has had lots of popularity on M4

Interesting read, I just wish they tested more ammo types/had more of a control group (ie: 8 rifles, 2 ea shooting same type or etc), but still some good info.

Well Ragequit we could do our own torture test for PAFOA. You and me, 20000 rounds each. I'll volunteer my Colt and you bring your AR. We can promise to have no fun at all and post the results. I'm sure between every member here on the board, we could get them to donate us the 40000 rounds.

Results of the test were not surprising.

Re: 4 Bushmasters vs 412lbs of ammo ( Steel vs Brass)
I'd have preferred they do the test with known good guns instead of hobby guns. Great article regardless. The difference in barrel wear was surprising as was the cost breakdown of steel vs brass even including barrel replacements. The MRBS numbers were not surprising and I'd be interested to know what they'd be with known good rifles. I doubt they'd change THAT much but at least all 4 rifles could have finished the test.

Re: 4 Bushmasters vs 412lbs of ammo ( Steel vs Brass)
Well that being said there were issues from the factory with a couple of the Bushies ( namely the Factory barrel nut being way under torqued )
But the BMs were a good enough sample and ran well . Despite being 1/9 twist the barrel steel is 4150 and the chambers were 5.56, so I feel a Colt or other gun would have similar results. Possibly a few less failures, ( the test guns were under lubed IMHO) but the Colt barrels would be shot out. The Spikes tactical had a milspec FN barrel that was shot out the same as the BMs that used the bi metal projectile.
I still dont want a Bushmaster or a ton of steel case ammo.......but they did some serious work under those conditions.
I'd also love to see the same test with a few Ferritic Nitrocarbonized (melonite) barreled guns thrown in for comparison to chrome lining.Last edited by Splittiebus66; January 31st, 2013 at 10:53 AM.

Re: 4 Bushmasters vs 412lbs of ammo ( Steel vs Brass)
I think I'll keep buying steel. I simply can't afford brass.
Which means I can't afford shooting thousands of rounds of steel.
Which means I have plenty of time to make sure my AR is clean.
Good test though, but keep importing the steel cased stuff please!

No real surprises there, but I did forget about how much extra wear the bimetal jackets create. And yes, if you can afford 10K brass-cased or steel-cased rounds, you can certainly afford new parts. I like steel for practice and brass for defense. Most of this is common sense, but it's still nice to see some actual test results.
You can never have enough horsepower or ammunition.
