Selling and shipping a firearm
I have a question and hopefully you all have an answer. I have an item posted in the classifieds and there has been interest in me shipping the firearm.
How would I go about this legally for me being a private seller. I know the transaction has to go through an FFL. Would I call the FFL of the buyer's choosing before shipping? Then ship UPS, FedEx, or through an FFL local to me?
Is there anybody who has done this before willing to shed some light on the experience?

If it is a long gun, and your buyer is in the same state as you, there is no need for an FFL.
USPS allows you to send long guns through the mail. I have mailed a shotgun to another member on here via US Postal Service.
If it is a handgun, then you must ship it to an FFL to have a transfer done. That gets to be a little more of a pain, but it's still pretty straightforward. You just need to inform the FFL ahead of time. Otherwise, this random gun shows up at their shop and they have no idea why.Everyone should have an AK-47

I would start by looking at all the stickies at the top of the general section.
Look for this one:

As a private seller, I have shipped numerous times, I am shipping one this week to a PA resident.
The problem one can run into is shipping clerks at the PO, UPS, etc... that don't know what they are talking about.
Simply:
A private seller can ship a long gun via USPS to a PA resident or to any FFL anywhere (California is the exception, you need prior authorization)
A private seller cannot ship a handgun through USPS, only FFL's can.
A private seller can ship any firearm through UPS but must use a HUB, not a UPS store.
Same thing, long guns to a PA resident or to any FFL.
Most UPS clerks will demand that you be a FFL in direct violation of their own company rules.
I never use FED EX so I have no advice.Last edited by 39flathead; January 28th, 2013 at 11:14 PM.
