Sorry, it's simply a matter of being able to mount the scope without drilling and tapping, I believe.

Wikipedia offers this from the scout rifle entry-

A forward-mounted telescopic sight of low magnification, typically 2-3 diameters. This preserves the shooter's peripheral vision, keeps the ejection port open to allow the use of stripper clips to reload the rifle, and eliminates any chance of the scope striking one's brow during recoil. Cooper has stated that a telescopic sight is not mandatory.

Peripheral vision was another thing I was thinking. And the concept that magnification is not needed is proven by the number of 1x red dot sights on the market.

Never thought about the stripper clips though.

Not to mention the fact that the closer a scope can be mounted to the barrel, the better. If you try to mount anything in the rear, close the the barrel, you will have trouble with the clips (like mentioned) and the ejection of the casing. You will also want a bent bolt to deal with not hitting the scope.

That gun looks amazing. I was just pricing ATI stocks at Dunham's this afternoon. Might have to wait until my one mosin turns into two.

I once had a M38 that turned scout, all the power you need and with the right ammo plenty of accuracy. nice scout carbine.

Use the Mosin M38 or 91/59 for the project. and get a S&K mount.
if you wanna save money keep the original stock. I do suggest use a FIXed power 3X to 4X LER scope. i find 2X too limited for anything beyond 100 meters. the effective range of a 7.62x54R is far grater.
    Is not safe. Is gun

very nice gun, i really wish someone would make a better alternative to the ati stocks. they always seem to be a lot of work to install and could be make much better. with so many of these rifles on the market someone could make a killing selling a scout package to upgrade the basic rifle. ex stock, bolt, scope mount, etc....

Bitchin! I have a 91/30 with the ATI Scope Mount and bent bolt. I modified an SKS bipod on the forearm and fabricated a cheekriser from oak to see thru the 3X10X50 scope. Nice project!
