ok here is a detail list

2x to7x LER scout rifle scope $55 (usually a 2x 2.5x or 3x fixed lens Long eye relief pistol scope will do save some money that way $30 to 35), Mosin Nagant Compensator $11, ATI Mosin Nagant Stock $60 , Allen Butt stock ammo carrier
$4 (a lot of brands Allen is the cheapest), Ncstar Mosin Scout mount $18 <-(not happy with it keep losing zero after one shooting session. I will ditch it for a S&K scout mount $79), UTG Tri-rail barrel mount and UTG Bipod $45 for both, Custom Bent Bolt modern style $40 ( I had someone custom made this).

oh finally i am adding a sling to it. still waiting for it in the mail. but it's Black hawk tatical sling $7.

yeah i know it costs more than the basic M44, but just think this way. a
"STEYR SCOUT" which is the REAL scout rifle costs $2500 and more. but if you build your own first of all IT"S FUN, second you saved more than $2100 dollars
and can still do the same thing "Stery Scout" can. once i get the new scout mount from S&K i'll post range results.

oh by the way Spraynpray if you are going to do this try to use a Mosin M38 i know it cost more i didn't cut my m38 it's just too nice. but using a M38 will just make this project a lot more easy for yourself.

I'm also in the process of sporterizing a mosin rifle. I chose the m38 since its lighter than the 91/30 and doesn't have a bayonet lug like the m44. i purchased the rifle for $115 and since then spent (including shipping) $75 on the monte carlo adv.tech. stock, $20 on a sling from walmart, and $75 on a scout mount, rings and scope from m1surplus.com. I didn't use locktite on the hardware the first time and the entire scope, and mount came loose after two or three rounds. My final $ total is $285 and I have a very accurate scout rifle. i couldn't be more happy with it and the best part is that i can put the rifle back to original condition without any permenant altering in less than 10 minutes.

try an m38 not the m44, since the m44 has a permenant bayonet lug that has to be cut off (expensive) and looks odd if left on after sporterizing.

Very cool! Those Mosins are a blast to shoot and don't kill your wallet.

You gotta put up some pice when it's all done

I'm familiar with the scout concept from when i used to read Jeff Cooper's column, but someone please remind me, what is the advantage of using a long-eye relief scope vs. a standard scope?

Standard scopes are made that they are focused and functioning properly with your field of view with your eye much closer to the back of the scope. The long eye relief allows you to properly view through the scope at a longer distance so you don't have to have your eye so close. A standard scope probably wouldn't work at all mounted in the scout fashion.

I'm glad you said that. I took mine apart and set all the screws with Loc-Tite and it shot great the next time at the range. Then, on the following trip, it was way off on the left. I put the rear leaf site back on and gave up for now. I may order a cracked stock Mosin from Century and do a project like this. I love shooting Mosins. If I do a project this far, I will heat and bend the bolt, as well as go the drill/tap route to make sure nothing moves. I won't do that to my historical and functional guns.

I know a standard scope wouldn't work in the scout position. My question is, what is the advantage to having the scope mounted that far forward on the rifle.
