S&W 36
I just went to my lgs to buy some ammo, and couldn't resist a gun they took in last night! Nice S&W model 36 no dash. Was told it came from a local retired detective - around 1950's I believe. Real nice shape, just a little holster wear here and there but otherwise mint. Any time I see a nice gun for $275 I just can't resist - think I did ok!

An old flat latch J frame. Whats not to like? If you want to know the year it was made post the letter prefix and first few numbers of the serial number and I'll look it up for you.
Congrats!

Re: S&W 36
Ok, From 1950-1969 there was no prefix for the J frames. The data is not complete in the book. They do however list 295000 as a 1962 date. So... I'm guessing 1961.

Re: S&W 36
Nice find. I went to the Oaks gun show in December looking for an older S&W at a decent price. The choices were very slim. It seems that they are really going up in price. Did find a really nice model 10-9 for $275. That was the only one i saw below $400 in .38.
Good luck with it. I have to get an all steel snubby.

Re: S&W 36
Now if you had had a copy of Jim Supica's book, you could have obtained it on a C&R by showing the date/number situation as it would show over 50 years old. At times, people do not realize that any gun more than 50 years old is C&R "fodder". A lot of Class 1 FFLs will only work by the ATF's C&R listings, without reading the smaller print. I just picked up a Ruger Mk I in excellent condition with the original bill of sale in the box. 1957 on the BoS, so C&R by 5 years plus. Dave_n
