Default New member from the Back Mt.

Good evening everyone. I am a new member to the PAFOA forums from the Harveys Lake area. I am an IT Specialist, NRA member & have a love for firearms. I currently own a Ruger SR9, Glock 23 4th gen & Mossberg ATR 100 30-06.

I am a pretty decent shot with my pistols, though I am still new & I am actively working on perfecting those skills (will be taking firearm courses to perfect them.)

Does anyone know of any good places to go out target shooting (pistol primarily) other than the range on Suscon Road, or the one up past Mt. Fresh in Sweet Valley? I ask because I like to take my time, try different stances, positions, and such. Usually when I go to the range, there is a decent crowd, and it makes it a little difficult for me to do these things.

Also I am completely new to shooting rifles. The 30-06 was a gift & I will be taking some courses to learn how to properly use the rifle, I was hoping some one would be able to provide some tips for a first time rifle shooter, or any tips for shooting in general. Thanks in advance!

When asked an old timer once told me "you want to become a good shot? all it takes is about 2 railroad cars of ammo a year"....In other words PRACTICE! Best of luck to you with your new hobby!!!

Regarding places to shoot in Luzerne county: There ain't much. There are the gun/hunting clubs that are for the privileged few thet can afford it and get the blessing from existing members to join. As far as the PGC ranges, I hope you know that you need a current hunting license or a range permit to use them or face a stiff fine if the game wardens see you there. Us poor slobs mostly use the "strippens" that dot our wonderfull county. You will need an ATV or a good off road capable 4x4 to get far enough away from the locals and avoid a visit from the police. If you have lived here long enought you will learn the real meaning of "it is the way it is".
You don't have enough guns untill you don't know how many you have.

I have a range permit, so I am okay on that aspect. Thanks for the rest of the input.

Not many places. I have yet to go to the strippings mentioned above although some friends go in nanticoke. I always go to my parents. I can get anywhere from ccw practice distance to about 325 (rough guess as I've never tried a range finder on it) yards shooting down into the hollow behind their house. They live over on rt 29 right by mooretown road. Maybe sometime if my friends and I are getting together to shoot I'll send you an invite.

Welcome from a fellow local IT professional. As small as this area is I'd bet we have an acquaintance or two in common. I'm a bit further south and actually travel into Colombia county to shoot, not likely within the range you are looking for.
Let us hope for the best, but let us also prepare for the worst.

There is the wilkes barre rod and gun club in Hunlocks Creek.
Then there is the Irem temple shooting range close to you.

    Both are private clubs.

Welcome, I don't come on here to often, busy shooting! The Wilkes Barre Rifle and Pistol Club in Muhlenburg is a very nice range with a lot of different competitions. We offer IDPA, CMP, Conventional Pistol, Smallbore and Metallic Silhouette.

Yes it is hard to get in, and we do require work hours. Personally I put in over 167 hours last year and 35 this year so far. The membership is limited to 100. There are some openings.

Best way to become a prospective member is to come to one of our events. Introduce yourself, everyone is friendly! You can go to our website www.wbrp.net and check out the calendar.
