Defects in Factory Rifle Ammo - Normal?
I haven't looked at any "hunting" rounds in years - I'm more familiar with ammo in .223 and 7.62x39.
I opened a box of Remington Core-Lokt ammo today to look at the rounds in comparison to a 223 round and was surprised to see a ding in the case.
Initially, I blew it off, as I've seen worse in a bulk pack of 9mm before.
I pulled out each of the 20 rounds to inspect them and found that 6 of the 20 had small dents in the brass case - most right on, or just below the necked down area.
Is this common? I've never noted "defects" of this nature with my other ammo. I could understand if it were reloaded ammo, but these came out of a sealed box.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Defects in Factory Rifle Ammo - Normal?
In reloads it would be common with too much lube during the resizing process. I wouldn't think that would be the case. I haven't bought factory ammo in years so I couldn't say how quality has been. If the dents are small I'd still shoot em. I've shot many of dented cases in both rifle and handgun.

Re: Defects in Factory Rifle Ammo - Normal?
Most if not all my reloaded .223 ammo that I get has the same small dent (Factory Reloads) ..... Factory new No ...... No dents ...... small dent in the neck area will blow out to match your chamber before the bullit is launched and will have no affect on accuracy ..... MO

Re: Defects in Factory Rifle Ammo - Normal?
Yeah, I have a pile of reloaded .223 and many have small dings on the cases, which I would expect since at some point they were thrown deliberately onto the ground before being reclaimed.
I just never noted it on factory ammo - at least not so many in such a small sample.
Will post pics in a minute.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Defects in Factory Rifle Ammo - Normal?
Those are not sizing dents. The dent itself has a sharp indent to it. A sizing dent would be smooth with no defined edge or indentation. Those dents are most likely made when the casing came in contact with a piece of machinery that has a sharp or square edge. I would most likely guess during packaging.
And I'm guessing 30-30 caliber and not (caliper).www.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.
