I have these as well.
One thing to look for/at is compression vs. clipping.
Many units clip signals above their threshold dB level. This means that once the microprocessor in the circuit detects a level above the threshold dB, it shuts down the speaker and acts as a passive muff.
ProEars brand units use a compression circuit. With this, the microprocessor attenuates the signal and passes it through the internal speaker. This means that the sound still gets to your ears, but compressed to a level below the threshold. A handy thing to have if, say, a range command is given at the same time someone squeezes one off.
Also, they are made in the US.
