Re: Conceal Carry in 39 States!!
This Lethal Force circus is coming to my town in a couple of weeks, with splashy ads in the paper including the nation-wide CC claims. I see lots of similar notifications for these classes on these forums, but strangely there are no follow-up posts. So I'm wondering what the deal is with these classes and I would appreciate some feedback from folks who have attended and then applied for the Utah (and Arizona) CC permit.
Were the classes worthwhile?
Are the claims for a virtually nation-wide CC permit correct?
Anyone have any experience with carrying outside of their home state, especially Ohio since they make a big deal of being able to carry in Ohio with the Utah permit?

Re: Conceal Carry in 39 States!!
I'm no expert, but from what I understand the class is a requirement set forth by Utah in order to obtain Utah's Non-Resident Concealed Carry Permit.
IIRC, the class consists of 5 hrs of Utah Law regarding CC. The class usually includes a finger print card that you'll need to take to your local PD to complete. You also need 2x2 passport type photos. The fee for the permit is $51 and I believe that is good for 7(?) years.
I believe the Utah permit covers 36 states (including Ohio) when combined with a PA LTCF.
States covered by above:
Alabama Louisiana Oklahoma
Alaska Maine Pennsylvania
Arizona Michigan South Dakota
Arkansas Minnesota Tennessee
Colorado Mississippi Texas
Delaware Missouri Utah
Florida Montana Vermont
Georgia Nebraska Virginia
Idaho New Hampshire Washington State
Indiana North Dakota West Virginia
Iowa North Carolina Wisconsin
Kentucky Ohio WyomingLast edited by Hawk; February 9th, 2013 at 10:27 AM.

Re: Conceal Carry in 39 States!!
I was certified to teach these classes until Utah required out of state instructors to travel to Utah for re-certification.
The fee charged for the course typically does not include the cost of the permit or any fees associated with fingerprinting and notarizing the documentation.
Were the classes worthwhile?
The focus is primarily on basic safety and Utah statutes governing the carry of a concealed weapon and use of deadly force.
Are the claims for a virtually nation-wide CC permit correct?
However, it is most unlikely that reciprocity agreements are reversed and more likely that agreements with new states are reached.
It is up to you to determine, when traveling or planning a vacation, to research those states to ensure the reciprocity agreements are in effect.
Anyone have any experience with carrying outside of their home state, especially Ohio since they make a big deal of being able to carry in Ohio with the Utah permit?
Regarding Ohio specifically, AFAIK Ohio does recognize Utah non resident permits.

Here is a good website for the state laws. http://www.handgunlaw.us/
Ohio recognizes non-resident licenses for all states it has reciprocity with EXCEPT Arizona. Utah is one of the States it honors.

Re: Conceal Carry in 39 States!!
I took one of these classes recently. I believe it is actually a total of 38 states. You get that total through a combination of the PA LTCF (required to apply for the Utah permit and I'm not sure if you need it for Arizona). During the class, you get a Utah application with the instructor stamp and signature. You get the application for Arizona, as well as instructions, on a CD.
Also, during the class, they take your picture for you to attach to the application. You also have a finger printer sell you prints for $10 each. One of the applications requires 2 copies and one of the applications requires one.
I just did the renewal on my PA LTCF so once I get it, I will finish my apps for both Utah and Arizona.
Here is the main difference between the two permits: (from the Legal Heat site)
Why would non-Arizona residents want an Arizona concealed firearm permit in addition to their resident state permit?
Answer: The Arizona permit, like the Utah permit, is very widely recognized. The difference between the Utah permit and the Arizona permit is that the Arizona is recognized by nearly all of the same states as Utah, but is also recognized by Nevada, Kansas, and New Mexico. Unlike Utah, however, an Arizona permit is not recognized in Minnesota or Washington. Each Legal Heat class qualifies students to obtain either the Utah or Arizona permits, students can then choose which permits they would like to obtain."The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
- Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
