Heirloom Christmas Present
I received a Christmas present from my girlfriend’s father that truly impressed me. He passed along his family’s Remington 12C that has been in the family for three generations.
The rifle was originally purchased by his great grandfather for hunting and was passed down to his grandfather. His grandfather received the rifle as a young boy and was taught to shoot with it. You can see where he carved his initials in the stock as a kid. I am the fourth generation to receive the rifle and will hopefully use it to teach my children to shoot someday, just like the previous generations.
The Remington 12C is a pump action .22 with a ten round magazine tube. This model does not have any barrel markings so it was made prior to 1930. John Pederson, who was praised John Browning, designed the 12C. Approximately 832,000 rifles were produced from 1909 to 1936. My rifle is number 572xxx, so I’m thinking it was made in the early-mid 1920s.
The rifle was popular with hunters and it was also common in old-time shooting galleries at carnivals. Can you imagine shooting 22 shorts at targets at a carnival? Times have certainly changed.
The rifle had been in storage for over a decade. I stripped the rifle down and gave it a thorough cleaning. I was impressed with the great shape the internals are in and the strong rifling. I took it out on New Year’s Day with a friend at Blandon Gun Club (35 degrees and a little snow). At 15 yards, it grouped six shots in about an inch. We took it out to 100 yards for fun and with a steady crosswind, I hit about half of my shots on a paper plate target. It was my first time shooting at that distance, so I was happy with the results. We also put a few rounds through my friend’s M1 Garand before it was too cold out. This past weekend, I took my younger brother out for his first shooting experience. We took this rifle out and my XDM. He had a great time and was surprisingly good. I think he is hooked on the hobby too.
The only issue with the rifle is that it doesn't like to feed the last round in the magazine tube. It looks like there isn’t enough spring tension to push the round all the way back to be picked up by the bolt carrier assembly. The first nine rounds usually feed great, but I will troubleshoot it when I have more free time.
Thanks for reading and I’d appreciate any additional info anyone has on the Remington 12C.

Re: Heirloom Christmas Present
It might be a trap! Trying to bribe you into marrying his daughter.

What an awesome gift!
When your girlfriend's dad gives you an heirloom like that, it says a lot about how much he approves of his daughter's choice.
Basically, this shows that he already considers you a part of their family.
Don't screw up that bond.Everyone should have an AK-47
