Default Just purchased my first gun today.

I was at the shop selling a inherited handgun when I was taking a look.
I had almost 3 hours of time to burn before I had to go to school.
My first choice the Ruger SR22 seemed to be a pain to get a hold of.
I saw the Smith & Wesson M&P 22 and they looked like twins almost.
It was a little more expensive but I went for it. Now when I take my NRA course, I'll have my own gun to learn with.

Feel free to give me tips, advice, comments.

Tip. An M&P 9mm or .40 would go good with that gun.

Great choice man.. Very glad to read also that you are taking an NRA course. I didn't do this personally, but researched and youtube'd gun safety extensively before buying my first pistol. Still tossing the idea around in my head of taking a class somewhere. There is a plethora of information available for hungry eyes/ears via the web though.

Nothing like practicing with your own gun, congrats man! You made an excellent choice in .22 for your first as well. Dirt cheap ammo, so you can practice whenever you want.

Stay safe, learn your gun inside and out... Shoot it often enough to be familiar with it, and also put enough rounds through it to trust its reliability if you should ever have to use it in a home defense situation.

    P.S. Don't buy Remington .22 ammo... It's garbage.

    THIS!
Also do a search on Bullet setback. Very important if your going to keep breaking down the gun if you keep one chambered.

Personly I bought the glock 22 (.40) and the advantage arms .22 upper. This way the trigger job is that on both my cheaper ammo training and my open carry pistol. Great gun choice thou and even better getting the training. Even thou I am in the military I am still going to take a class when my enlistment is up.

Haha, As cheap as this gun was, it still broke my bank. I'm a broke college student at the moment! But after learning how to shoot this gun, and everything basic I need to learn, in the future I will go for a larger caliber.

    And thank you everyone else.

I will definitely watch that Bullet Setback video later.

Chillafusion... What type of ammo would you prefer?

Don't really have to worry about bullet setback with a .22lr and a .22lr is not a good carry gun caliber anyway.

I use a lot of Remington thunderbolts in my .22 rifles but they are not as picky as some of the pistols. CCI .22lr ammo is top notch however it is also some of the most expensive. I long for the days of buying a brick of .22lr for well under $10. Was not that long ago either.

CCI doesn't seem too bad. From my googling of prices.
Especially if it's the only gun I'm firing.

    Anything but Remington "Golden Bullets"
I like anything from CCI, or Federal.
The price difference is nominal, but the quality is much higher.

Good choice! Next, you should get yourself a nice holster. I would think it would fit a standard M&P holster, which you could use down the road if you buy one in a larger caliber.

And it's a great carry gun, compared to what you had before.
