Handgun Training

Being new to the website I'm sure this question has been asked numerous times - I apologize for any redundancies. I would like to locate a handgun training course/class close to my father and I for both of us to attend. Our main interests are around proper handling and use of handguns for personal protection inside the home. Can anyone give suggestions as to whom they recommend? We live in the Lancaster area. I am 45 and my father is 74. Thank you for your help.

Start with whatever classes your local range has to offer. Chances are they have an NRA class or two and maybe a homegrown course. I don't know what's local to you in that regard.

The next step up are the regional trainers. You're fairly near to Harrisburg, yes? If so, check out:

I have trained with Steve of FRI in the past and well worth it. I have to give a good recommendation to his training. If you should decide on him you wont be sorry.

True, but I would put that in the outer radius of "places you have to stay at a hotel while training there" as opposed to the "can sleep in your own bed" radius.

I've been to the NRA Instructor Certification course, and unless you need to start with "This is the end the bullet comes out of," the NRA basic courses are a waste of your time and money.

In my case, the NRA certification was a requirement for something else. But their courses tend to take the term "basic" to the extreme.

But, we were ALL at that level at one time. Just because we are past it doesn't mean that there isn't a huge need for it.

I agree with Steve on this one. I had done a lot of researching on the Internet about handgun safety and shooting techniques before I even purchased my first handgun. By the time I went to the range for the first time, I was pretty-well versed in the basics. But then I did take the NRA Basic Pistol course at Freedom Armory in Glen Rock. While most of the material presented was a review, it was nice to have it presented in a classroom format. The one-on-one range time with the instructor *really* improved my shooting technique and accuracy as well.
