You need the right material for center fire pistol and rifle or it won't last. I've made plenty of 22 targets from standard carbon steels.

O hmm did not know that, i've seen various steels shot and hardness plays a factor in penetration. but never thought about that in regards to targets.

These are really expensive and a lot of folks do exactly what you described. I'm no expert in steel, but there is apparently different types (hardness levels).

I had bought from them previously a 3/8" torso. It handles non-magnum loads from 10 yds with ease. Doesn't even scratch it. The manufacturer has guidelines on caliber and distance for each target.
