I DO prefer the "shake awake" of the Romeo 5.

I DO prefer the included flip up SEE THRU lens caps of the MSR

I go back and forth between wanting push buttons which are easier and knobs which are (in my mind) more reliable.

Bushnell has a 29% mail in (or online ) rebate

Buy a qualifying PRIME, NITRO, FORGE, ENGAGE or AR OPTICS product and get 29% back on your retail purchase. (oh and free shipping)

They have some great pricing for some decent budget scope options on clearance on their site. Picking up one for my .22 takedown

How would you compare this Anderson upper to a a similarly-priced PSA upper?

Probably very similarly. Both have a lifetime warranty, both 4150 nitrided barrel steel, both usually MPI but not HPT tested bolt carrier groups. PSA is 1:7 twist which is Milspec, but versus 1:8 there's very little practical difference. You may see instability with 77gr projectiles, but still likely not.

One thing I'd suggest is to perhaps get a similar style midlength upper. More handguard length, smoother operation for faster follow up shots and less wear on internals. Midlength is the ideal gas system for 16" barrels as carbine length was really designs for 14.5" barreled M4s.

I'd look at this too. It lists a 9130 bolt which will probably be fine, but the spec isn't as good as carpenter 158. The Anderson doesn't list a spec for the bolt so it's probably 9130 too. However, I know PSA often just gives you a 158 bolt even when the listing is for 9310, but that's a bit of luck.

Edit - this one guarantees you a 158 bolt, and you get the magpul handguard and rear sight for a few bucks more:

Yeah, between the two, unless I was set on one twist rate over the other, I'd just buy the one that costs less shipped.

    PSA twist 1:7
    Poverty Pony 1:8

BCG is phosphate (standard) on both

    PSA BOLT Carpenter 158 steel
    Poverty Pony BOLT 9310 steel

Aside from that, I am also not seeing much difference.

If you just want to stick to a BASIC M4 style, flip a coin.

The other one mentioned by jthrelf is a good choice too and a great value.
Add up the cost of the Magpul hand guard and rear BUIS that are included and factor in the more desirable mid length gas system, and that's the one I would choose.
I can't say that the mid length barrel on my wife's lightweight is THE reason it shoots so soft because I do have other parts on it that contribute to that as well, but my 7,62x39 barrel is a midlength as well, and it's a nice shooter too.

If you find you don't like the Magpul hand guard, sell it (everyone loves Magpul) and buy another type of drop in hand guard.
UTG Pro (?) has some nice 2-piece units that have the appearance of a tubular free float hand guard that will work with a gun with a front sight gas block like that.

To clarify, THIS is the one I would choose.

EDIT: of the 2 mid lengths, I'd go with the Magpul furniture.
M4 style hand guards in mid length look dorky - but more practically, they don't offer any mounting options that the Magpul furniture allows.
