    Default Question about Maryland

    We're spending the weekend in MD with my parents. I want to bring my Glock. I know I can't carry in MD, but can I have it in the house while I'm there? My parents don't have an issue with it, but legally could I?

    It'll be unloaded in my bag in the trunk on the way down obviously reloading on arrival. Anything else I should be concerned about?

    From the NRA Firearms Law Synopsises for MD:
    A person may transport a handgun if they can demonstrate that the handgun is being carried, worn or transported:
    • To or from a place of legal purchase or sale, or repair shop;
    Between a person’s bona fide residences, or between his residence and place of business, if the business is operated and substantially owned by that person;
    • While engaged in, or traveling to and from a target shoot, formal or informal target practice, sport shooting event, hunting, trapping, or dog obedience training class or show; or
    • By a bona fide gun collector who is moving any part or all of his gun collection from place to place for public or private exhibition.
    During transportation to and from the above places the handgun must be unloaded and carried in an enclosed case or enclosed holster. An additional penalty is provided for any person convicted of unlawfully wearing, carrying or transporting a handgun, if his deliberate purpose was to injure or kill another person.
    IANAL, but I would think that your parents' home would be considered your 'bona fide residence' while you are visiting them.

    That MAY indeed be correct, and if you find yourself stopped and a LEO finds your gun you will no doubt have the opportunity to test that theory in court. The officer will not be interested in discussion legal issues with you. He finds a gun, you go to jail. Let the lawyers hash it out. You likely would enjoy the hospitality of the State of Maryland Department of Corrections for some period of time. Me...I wouldn't chance it...but that's just me. I can't afford the lawyer bills.

    As quoted above, MD law is pretty strict. No way can you have the gun on your person.
    And unless you meet one of those exceptions listed above, it's seems like it is best not to take it with you at all, from a police-hassle standpoint.

    However, if you feel you must take it, unload it, put and gun and ammo in separate containers, and put them in your trunk or as far away as possible from the passenger compartment. And don't speed or do anything else to attract the police

    Yep, it really sucks

    Do yourselves a favor...If your going to MD, NJ, or NY and stopping in the state for ANY reason, leave your guns at home. There is almost no place in these states you can carry anyway. When I go to these states I accept the fact that I need to avoid some places and find other ways to protect myself. If you do choose to try to take a gun to MD and get busted, please don't expect me to contribute to your defence fund! You've been warned!!!

    Better be careful.. "bona fide" in some states has a meaning of "legal" or "actual" despite is latin meaning.
