    Default rusty magazine

My original kimber mag is rusting in places, just surface rust. What can I do to stop that and fix it? I know people are going to say buy a better mag, and I have a better mag, but this one is fine, I just want to stop that rust and maybe prevent it from doing that. Or is it just because its made out of shit metal, and will just keep doing that regardless.

steel wool, and wipe down with oiled rag now and then? shitty metal or quality metal steel will rust sooner or later, especially if you don't take care of it

I will try the steel wool. This is the only mag that does that. I have 20 year old AR mags and AK mags that just sit forever, and are fine. I use kim-pro mags in my kimber and they are fine. This mag don't get used rarely at all, it just sits on my bench, and it is rotting away lol.

Just used 230 sandpaper cuz steel wool wouldn't do anything, and everywhere there was a rust area, its in the metal, and it wont sand away. Oh well, oil it, and watch it rot

More specifically, 0000 steel wool. This is very fine (not coarse) steel wool.

Also, I'd use a solvent (Hoppes #9) rather than just gun oil.

because most AR or AK mags are coated in someway to make it a rust proof.
(I presume Kimber mag your having an issue is standard Blued mag).

Regardless of what sort of high tech coating or surface treatment it may have, if not taking care of, it'll eventually sercames to corrossion sooner or later.

yea, its the standard blued mag. I sanded the shit out of it. All the blue is now gone, but I cant get the marks off of the steel where the rust was occurring, which is what leads me to think its in the metal. I may try some flitz and a dremel wheel. I dont use this mag much, but I still dont want it to rust away.

Which came first, sanding it to death or the rust?

use a scotchbrite pad instead of steel wool. Any, I mean any, strands left behind from the steel wool will rust the hell out of the mag, even little particles.

Send it back to Kimber. For what they charge for their products you should get better.

Yea, don't use steel wool. Same reason you don't use anything steel or that has touched steel when grinding aluminum. You WILL make the rust worse. Take it from a welder. Best bet would be to use something like CHEMICAL mentioned and never use it for anything else. And oil will help too. Maybe look at getting the magazine plated, but for that price I bet you could just buy another mag.
