Default Where does the money go?

As I posted in my timeline thread, my $200 check was cashed.

It got me wondering, where does that money go? I assume it is slated for a certain budget or fund. Does it help pay the legal fees of the ATF when they try to bust a smalltime FFL for not crossing the 'T's in his log book?

Does it pay for the time it takes the agent to approve your application?

Does it pay for illegal imigrants to have health care?

Does it fund secret tests on alien spacecraft?

    Does anyone know?

    Are we alone?

    A quick history check.

This $200 was a result of the 1939 law. A tax stamp to make it very inconvenient for those in the 40's to have a NFA weapon.

    Adjust that 200 bucks (1939) for inflation and it's 2900 today (2007).

    a few corrections:
the law was made in 1934, not 1939, which is why its called the "National Firearms Act of 1934"

the alleged reason was to stop the easy accquisition of machineguns by the various gangs, however this is kind of a spurious argument, AND they wanted to add ALL handguns to the NFA also.
League of women voters got that one shut down.

It looked like it was something designed to make sure the Treasury agents had something to do after Prohibition was ended, they KNEW that would be repealed soon.

as for the inflation, yer spot on.
Remember, a Thompson submachine gun cost less than the TAX on it in the 30s, so in effect, it did stop LEGAL sales to some extent.

Plus, who was going to bother spending $200 in the 30s to register a chopped barrel on a $20 shotgun?

As for where the money goes, since its a tax payment, it goes into the general fund thats marked for budgetary disbursement to the US govt, and could be used for any of thousands of Federal budgetary items.
Its not specifically claimed by the ATF. If it was, I'd bet they'd ENCOURAGE NFA ownership, as thier budget would grow.

As for actual Tax collected figures, the ATF and the GAO publishes reports on these items, and Small Arms Review also reports these figures on how much was collected in Excise and NFA taxes.
