Default Steel case ammo in an AR?

    Hi folks,
Will using steel case ammo in an AR cause any type of issues? I got lucky today and finally got my hands on an AR which I really want to shoot. The only ammo I could find around was this cheap steel cased MFS ammo.

Some AR's won't like it. All of my AR's shoot it fine and it will not harm your AR.

It won't harm your gun. If you have a tight or out of spec chamber, you may get a case stuck from time to time. Just use a chamber brush every once and a while and you will be good to go.

Alright thanks, I'll give it a try. Is there any brand of brass ammo in particular that you recommend? I'm more into pistols then anything and my glock typically eats anything you throw at it. Not sure if AR's are the same or not.

It has been shown to cause ejection problems when you follow up with brass without a good cleaning.

Also steel case like most budget ammo (including budget brass) usually runs a bit dirtier requiring more cleaning

But for me and many others additional cleaning is well worth it for the cost savings.

When I first got my ar I bought some tula to shoot because it was the cheapest ammo I could find. The first time shooting every few shots I'd get one that would fail to extract and would get stuck in the chamber. After doing some reading around I found out that if you gun has problems shooting steel cased ammo there's something wrong with your gun. I ended up ordering for a few dollars a BCM extractor spring upgrade kit and ever since I got that my gun runs tula all day with zero problems.

If you're looking for a cheaper way to shoot your ar try to get your hands on a CMMG 22 conversion kit. I got mine a couple months ago and I find myself having more fun shooting 22s than 223.
