Question about reloading in basement.
Im wanting to set up my reloading stuff this week. I was going to do it in the cellar. Its a stone floored and walled basement. stays about 60 year round. somewhat moist in the summer. I was going to keep all my supplies in sealed totes with desicant in them. Will the Humidity bother my digital scale? untrasonic cleaner? press will be oiled so I assume its fine. finished ammo will be stored in a temp controlled gunsafe once its done. but mostly wondering if the equipment will be ok down there.
I will run a dehumidifier in the summer.

Re: Question about reloading in basement.
You will definitely want to oil up any bare metal parts on your press that are made of iron, steel, or tin. My poor old RCBS Jr. has a red & brown "patina" on its bare metal it now sitting in the basement of my old house during a lull in reloading. Once you oil the bare parts, you should probably throw a breathable cloth over the entire press too to keep dust/dirt off it.

Re: Question about reloading in basement.
My reloading center is in my basement also.
With central air and a heat pump, my heating unit is outside, so I have no heating unit to help during the winter, or cool in the summer.
Alabama is a high humidity state, but, no worse than Ohio, where I moved from.
I started finding small splotches of rust starting on my reloading dies, so, after some quick attention, I went to Lowe's, and found a dehumidifier.
The unit is a small one, but still works great, and, after mounting it high to the ceiling, I was able to drain it through a hole in the foundation that was drilled by the "bug man"
My wife stores stuff in the basement also, so, the dehumidifier helps out there also. It was easy to persuade her of the benefits to help with the purchase.

Re: Question about reloading in basement.
I do all my reloading in the basement. I have a Rockchucker and a Lee Classic Turret in one room and my Dillon in another. My basement is not damp per se, but I do get water if it rains hard enough.
Your furnace and air conditioner should suck enough of the moisture out of the air but I would run a dehumidifier when they aren't running. I have had no rust issues since running the dehumidifier. It doesn't hurt to wipe the dies with an oily rag between uses.

Re: Question about reloading in basement.
Go to Walmart or wherever and get a digital humidity sensor. Set your dehumidifier to keep the humidity below 40%. Use your meter to verify the performance of the dehumidifier. If you stay in the 35% to 40% range you will be fine.

Re: Question about reloading in basement.
Keep your press oiled at all times. My basement is damp and I have had a small amount of surface rust start on one of my die sets.

Keep that dehumidifier cranking. Keep your powder upstairs. Oil your press a lil'bit. You'll be good to go.
Some of my adversaries used ammunition loaded on dirt floors in Peshawar with tons of moisture, dirt and other impurities. Granted, you (we) have a higher standard, but as long as you keep your press in good order and your ingredients in good order, you'll be ok.Last edited by animalmother85; December 25th, 2012 at 02:57 PM.
