Re: License to Carry in Berks County
Why?
Old law:
h) Fee.--The fee for a license to carry a firearm is $19. This includes a renewal notice processing fee of $1.50. This includes an administrative fee of $5 under section 14(2) of the act of July 6, 1984 (P.L.614, No.127), known as the Sheriff Fee Act. No fee other than that provided by this paragraph or the Sheriff Fee Act may be assessed by the sheriff for the performance of any background check made pursuant to this act. The fee is payable to the sheriff to whom the application is submitted and is payable at the time of application for the license. Except for the administrative fee of $5 under section 14(2) of the Sheriff Fee Act, all other fees shall be refunded if the application is denied but shall not be refunded if a license is issued and subsequently revoked. A person who sells or attempts to sell a license to carry a firearm for a fee in excess of the amounts fixed under this subsection commits a summary offense.
Part of new law:
(h) Fee.--The fee for a license to carry a firearm is $19.
10 This includes a renewal notice processing fee of $1.50. This
11 includes an administrative fee of $5 under section 14(2) of the
12 act of July 6, 1984 (P.L.614, No.127), known as the Sheriff Fee
13 Act. The sheriff may charge an applicant an additional fee not
14 to exceed actual costs, or $5, whichever is less, to cover the
15 costs of complying with the photograph requirement under
16 subsection (e)(3).
I find it interesting that the old law at least was $19 for a license and that it is a summary offense to charge more than that. I appreciate the plastic license but last time I looked $19 plus $5 was $24
Why does & has the Berks Sheriff thumbed his nose at that law? Does he refund the other dollar? Law is law isn't it? Am I missing some other law?

Re: License to Carry in Berks County
The fee was increased in i believe it was may of 2006. The current crimes code shows the increase from $19 to $25. $5 goes towards a point of contact which i believe begins the beginning of 2007. There will be a phone number printed on licenses for law enforcement to call to verify or answer any questions they have regarding a permit when someone is stopped. This will hopefully give us a better chance of reaching a reciprocity agreement with states like Virginia and Ohio. $1 of the increase goes towards a state wide fund which will make permits uniform throughout the state so one person doesn't receive a credit card permit while someone else gets a piece of paper that is easy to duplicate. I'll see if i can get a copy of the current crimes code and copy paste it on here later.

Re: License to Carry in Berks County
I forget where I read it but I think PA has one of the highest number of license holders per capita in the country.
