Here is a nice article on the history of the town and area.

    http://pabook.libraries.psu.edu/palitmap/Scotia.html

More interestingly for you...the sources at the end

Ness, C. H. Scotia Ore Mines and Iron Works collection. 1954. Penn State University Libraries, Special Collections.
If you are at PSU, perhaps you can request permission to view these. Many universities permit their special collections to be viewed upon request.

Another one in their special collections.

I'll bet you'll find a bunch of pics, maps, etc. Be sure to share what you find

...the whole region was very much centered around iron in the very beginning because of an abundance of trees and limestone used in making iron. There is still the remains of an old iron furnace near the Centre Furnace mansion on East College. Head out to Curtin Village and you can take a tour of an old iron furnace workings.

Mity2, thanks for digging this peice of history up and posting the pics. Very cool. I love old history.

I grew up near a similar ghost town called Peale PA. Thriving town for all of 30 years before the coal mine packed up and moved. But there are still building foundations, remains of old roads, a few structures, and cemetary.

    Neat stuff.

This entire area once thrived from the Iron ore industry, there are still many iron furnaces in the area, some in the middle of nowhere, and some quite close to roads/civilization. Keep your eyes open as you drive around the area, and you'll probably spot some.

Greenwood Furnace State Park has two restored furnaces like to one on East College Ave. Also, a very nice Blacksmith shop and Visitor's center with the displays and artifacts. But I think the Blacksmith shop is only open on weekends in the summer months. Plus, it's only 20 miles south of State College.
