How to dispose of un-used pepper spray?
I keep a can of pepper spray in the car, and, thankfully, never had to use it. It is well past the experation date now, and I'd like to dispose of it and get a new can at the gun show next week. Any thoughts on how to do this? Is is ok (and legal) to just throw it in the trash? If not, what would you suggest? Just want to make sure I'm following the law and not doing anything that could harm somebody.

Re: How to dispose of un-used pepper spray?
Pepper spray can last beyond the expiration date. Earlier this year I sprayed a dog effectively with a can that had an expiration date of around 2008. I understand that the pepper loses some of its "heat" over time, but I find that as long as the propellant is still good, it can still be effective. Very cold temperatures can have a negative affect on the propellant. If I have older cans or ones that have been kept in a car during a cold winter, I will test them on occasion.
...and they have a plan...

Take it to the polls on Tuesday and find the people with Obama stickers...lol...
Just kidding... Simple solution would be to take it outside, place inside a heavy duty plastic bag, and release it slowly into the bag by pressing the "trigger" through the bag from the outside. Let sit for at least an hour and dispose of with the trash.
I would NOT just place into the trash because it COULD either explode into the garbage truck or be released onto one of the workers...
JUST MY OPINION...... Others may have a better solution....

Re: How to dispose of un-used pepper spray?
I have heard it recommended that people should practice hitting a desired target with the pepper spray. With differing canister styles and differing sprays (range, force), maybe it would be a good idea to use the expired stuff to practice at a safe location somewhere.

Put an "eye drops" label on it and drop it on the sidewalk.
