First time gun purchase
Hello,
I am looking to buy my first gun and was hoping for some advice on a type and store locations. I am buying it strictly for self-defense. I am not worried so much about price as I am about quality. However I am not trying to pay an outrageous amount either? If someone could point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Re: First time gun purchase
Maybe try anthony arms across from the allegheny county airport. Ask for joe, leo,or tony only if you go. There is a selection of 50 guns downstairs you could rent and try out before you buy. Glock or Springfield 9mm,.40,or .45 would be your most common variety, and they are not too expensive used or new.

Glock 19. IMO it fits the bill of one handgun for both HD and a carry weapon.
You can pick one up at almost every lgs out there.

Re: First time gun purchase
glock 19 gen 3.. gen 4 seems to have people quirmish, but i have not "seen" anything bad so i can't say yes or no..
xd 9 or xdm
s&w m&p 9mm
if you look on youtube you will get a MILLION opinions.. but everyone agrees.. if you want reliable.. get a glock/xd/mp
i personally have the xd.. my brother has the glock and m&p... i personally like the m&p the best because of the low profile.. but the trigger you have to get used too..
edit: if i had to purchase today i would go m&p... it shoots nice and if it matters made in US..Last edited by jonstahura; October 31st, 2012 at 09:39 PM.

My husband and I really like our fs 9m M&Ps. The trigger isn't great out of the box but seems to get better with useage. (or Apex parts as many have done)

Re: First time gun purchase
S&W has introduced their SD line of handguns to to try to get out from under the Sigma Stigma. Sigma's first generation was junk, IMHO. However, I own the 3rd gen Sigma SW9VE (V stands for Stainless), and after a little it of trigger polish, it's been flawless.
My wife has the SD9VE, which has a bit of a better trigger system, and is much nicer than mine. Both are safe and reliable carry weapons, and can be had in the $300 and under range, with the SW9VE being in the $200-$275 range, used."A free people ought to be armed."--George Washington

Re: First time gun purchase
Glock 19 is an excellent recommendation. I chose a Gen 3 over the Gen 4 simply because it was more comfortable in my hand and I didn't need the ambidextrous mag release.
Also have a S&W M&P Shield and love it as a carry option as well.
Everything about the G19, though, is simpler and more straightforward. I have the utmost confidence in it.

I recommend Ace Sporting Goods in Washington, Pa. A little drive but knowledgeable people behind the counter, better service.
I don't work there BTW.
