What is the fascination with the 1911 45cal.?
I have a FNP-45 15+1 that I like very much. Having never shot a 1911 45 I wonder why so much popularity being a SA and not having much capacity. Is it the military weapon thing or do people really feel that it is the one and only 45?

Re: What is the fascination with the 1911 45cal.?
Old men like myself started carrying the 1911s because it was a step up from snub nose .38s of the day. Once you get comfortable with a specific type of gun it's hard to switch to another format. I do have a strong liking for SA XD pistols and prefer the .45 compact version. YMMV. tom.

Re: What is the fascination with the 1911 45cal.?
Why do people prefer the 1911 over so many other pistols? First off, it is a classic, designed by none other than John Moses Browning. It was the standard military sidearm of the United States Military for over 75 years, and is still in use by the US Military to this day.
The pistol feels very comfortable in the hand to most shooters, and also has a natural point of aim for most shooters. The round it fires, the .45 ACP round, was designed for this pistol, well over 100 years ago, and it is still one of the most popular pistol rounds to this day.
The pistol has been everywhere, having been carried by the US Military, from the US Punitive Expedition in Mexico, to the trenches of France in World War One, then to both the European and Pacific Theatres in World War Two, to South Korea during the Korean War, to South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, to Kuwait and Iraq during Desert Storm, and to both Iraq and Afghanistan by our current forces.
Not only has the military carried it, but our nation's police forces have carried it as well. To this day, it remains one of the most copied pistol designs, and for very good reasons, and, it will continue being produced for a very long time to come."A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Pick up a 1911, thrust out your hand at a target........check the sights against the target.......now you know.

Re: What is the fascination with the 1911 45cal.?
Another quality of the 1911 is that it can be made remarkably accurate and given a trigger that is second to none.
It is the premier firearm in the .45 stage of Bullseye match competition. Despite the availability of other types of .45 ACP pistols, it is rare to see any gun other than a 1911 used for the .45 stage. (Personally, I have never seen any gun but a 1911 being used).
