Re: 30-30 WIN
Always was - - still is - - for 30-30.
I've never found a powder more consistent for my Win 94. Jacketed 150 or 170, at around (or slightly over) factory velocities.
And the cast bullet/Unique loads are great fun, cheap, good practice, and a use for cases that are getting suspect at case-head separation time.
Case-head separation can be a real issue with rimmed cases. If you don't full-length resize the cases, merely neck-size them, you will get greater case-life, but now you may have the problem that cases fired in one particular rifle may not chamber properly after reloading in some other given rifle.
If you aren't loading to extreme pressure and velocity, you can get good case life (5-8 reloadings) reliably with neck-only sizing. However, after three or four reloadings, they ought to be relegated to range-practice only, and not depended on for hunting or other serious purposes. And take a case-extractor along to the range, because you WILL ultimately need it when reloading 30-30. (Ask me how I know this one. ) I've had good success with a .45-cal bronze brush.
Try a 150-180 grain cast gas-check bullet with the 8 - 10 gr Unique or try a 30-cal roundball over 4 gr of Unique for a cheap plinking load.

Re: 30-30 WIN
I'll try to get some data on the comparison of velocity. I was at 3820fps average with a 57gr solid brass bullet and 43.5gr of 4895. I have loads loaded for it with the same projectile all the way to 44.5. I have no way of measuring pressure other than calipers on the extractor groove. I'm hoping 43.5gr of 4064 gets me close to 3800fps. We shall see.

i have been using that powder for 20 years along with the 150 gr. bullets. got a deer at 200 yds. with that load in a 26" barred 94 rifle.

Re: 30-30 WIN
I tried using 3031 but had a hard time with the stick powder in my measure. Started using win748 and hodgdon BLC-2 with a 150gr bullet. I also use a Marlin 336 and it is super accurate.

Re: 30-30 WIN
I second this. Meters like water, plus I buy it in 8lb jugs 'cause it's my powder for 52gr SMK in .223, so there's always lots around!
I find it to be plenty accurate in my 30-30.
ETA: BLC-2 worked just as well, and is also ball powder, so it meters great also. But like I said, for me, I always have lots of H-335 on hand, so since my results were comparable, I just use the H-335.Last edited by NA Wreckdiver; November 10th, 2012 at 09:44 PM.

Re: 30-30 WIN
As far as primers, some manuals will recommend "magnum" for h-335, I've never had an issue using "standard" primers. You can use either as long as you work up the load.
