Storing a gun for someone
I have a question for you guys. I have a cousin in Virginia that owns a pistol. He currently has some roommates and isn't around all the time and is worried about his firearm. He asked if I would mind holding it for him until he gets his own place. I told him to wait until I checked the legality of it before I answered, if it's legal then no problem. I'm not sure about the Virginia laws, all I know is that his father owned it and when he passed away my cousin took possession of it. He would just bring it up with him on his next trip up this way. What do you guys think?

Wow, 100 views and only one reply which doesn't answer the question. Thought for sure I'd have an answer by now. I guess nobody knows.

Re: Storing a gun for someone
I'm pretty sure you would have to have it transferred through an ffl since it is an out of state transfer. Even though it's only temporary. IANAL

Re: Storing a gun for someone
He could just "loan" it to you, as long as you have a LTCF, right?

Re: Storing a gun for someone
I should probably delete my post before someone comes along and gets their panties all twisted and claims that I'm advising law_breaking. Let me clarify, that while I am no lawyer, I don't feel that storing a firearm for a friend falls under any of these categories: "transfer, sell, trade, give, transport, or deliver any firearm." Which doesn't mean some ass sucking antigun DA wouldn't take a shot at proving that it was given the chance I suppose.
Typical government having no business in our business bullshit. It has to start someplace... It has to start sometime...

Re: Storing a gun for someone
Thanks everyone, I sort of figured big brother would have something to say about it somewhere. I thought about a "loan" also but was pretty sure that was just between state residents. All this government intrusion is bullshit, you can't even help a guy out without breaking some sort of law. I doubt anything would ever come of it either but it's a chance I don't want to take.
The transfer wouldn't be a big deal on this end, he could just bring it up on his next trip up to see his mom. The problem is when he wants it back I would have to drive down there to transfer it back. Not the answer I wanted to hear but I appreciate the help.
