Default S&W 629-1 with scope mount notches....

I recently came across a S&W 629-1 in an 8 3/8 barrel with scope mounts machined into the barrel. I did some research on these and found some interesting info but I was wondering if anyone here is a S&W fan that may know something about these other than they were a limited run.

I was wondering what you thought the value might be on something like this? Internet prices seem spread out. This is in great shape as shipped from the factory with box, paperwork, scope rings and wax paper etc.

It was something I have never seen before in this model and was very curious. I already own a 629 but you never know if it is a good deal maybe I would think about it.

I guess it all depends on the price and how much you want a rare gun. It would make a fine hunter with a scope on it, or even a target gun, but if it comes with the box, papers, etc. you'd think twice about shooting it much.

    I have a 6" 686 with a scope that's a fun range toy.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4,810 were made in 1989. What I don't understand is that 1989 should have made the base a 629-2 or -3...

I have 586-3 with scope mounts .357 mag. box and papers. Purchased it about 15 years ago at Boscovs.

I was just trying to see what an acceptable price would be. The guy wants $800 for it.

I haven't hunted in years but am thinking about getting back into it if I can ever find some time. I have an itch to try to pick it up since I will be selling another gun soon and because it is somewhat rare and an older model but what is realistic for cost? Do you think it is worth $800?

I would probably shoot it more at the range or just hang on to it shooting it occasionally for fun.

I have never seen one with the scope mount notches. Is it similar to what the Ruger Redhawk Hunters have?

    I have a 629-4, 8 3/8" barrel, with a scope. Sweet shooting gun!

You might want to cruise over to the S&W forums and ask there. They seem like a very knowledgeable and helpful bunch. They should be able to give you some info!

As for price? I can't help. I've had my 629 w/Leupold scope for sale on here and several other forums for $900 and have not had any real bites on it. I have had a bunch of offers to purchase without the scope for $600+, which is a little less than I think it should go for.

Good suggestion. Here is a link showing one.

    That is pretty slick!

Really reminds me of the Ruger Redhawk hunter notch design/setup.

Is your other 629 topped witha scope?

If you go with this model, what scope would you throw on it?

This is my other 629 attached. I currently don't have any scoped pistols and prior to seeing this I was considering a thompson contender in .223 just for fun long range shooting.

I also have a 4 inch redhawk for woods carry.

I would need to shop around for a scope I am not sure what I would get.

Are you sure it's marked 29-1?

3rd change was in the early 80's IIRC, I think '83 and the link you provided said they were only made in '88 & '89.

Are you sure it's not a frankengun?

That all said, dealer cost on a new Model 29 blued is a little more than $800.
Cost on a 629 Classic is a bit over $700.

So $800 for one with odd ball rings that you can probably never replace is something I'd think hard about if you plan on shooting it.
If you're looking for a hunter, there are other options IMO for the money.
