the story of my shootout
ok so first off i have no idea if this is the right place for such a thread, but none of the other places looked any more appropriate, so admins feel free to move where ever it should be. also im going to be posting in parts, mostly cause im pretty sure itll time out if i try to do it all at once. also to give time for questions and for me to remember other details and such. last so my gf can read/ help edit and remind me of other things. that said, here is...
pt 1
the story, like probably most like it, started off boring and normal. sept 4th, regular day. get up. day off. pick up girlfriend, eat baha fresh (get dissapointed by it), go home, have sex, watch tv, go to sleep. normal right? well, except for that sleep part. that part got interrupted. about 1:30 am, roommate gets home from work. my good buddy, havnt seen him in a while, 'hey you up for a smoke before bed?' so i say sure and after he sets his shit down and we step outside, sit on our front stoop (4 steps leading to the door), and light our ciggarettes, and take a drag...
now some backstory:
i was a temple u student living off campus. to be more exact, 2 blocks north of campus, at the time the corner building of 12th and dauphin st. you can clearly see the architecture/engineering building from even our front window. our block consists of us on the end, an empty building, more college kids, and the rest of the row was a pretty even mix of local community members and a few students mixed in. not too terrible a place, as far as north philly goes. truth being its actually very much a block by block thing, one block might be completely fine and look like it could be any suburb street, the next you might easily end up waking up in the gutter missing an organ or two. if at all. our place wasnt pretty, and it wasnt the best as far as saftey goes(we did have one roommate get her laptop stolen, had it lifted right out an unlocked ground level window), but we thought being only 2 blocks from campus and well lit with good visibility in 3 directions and reasonable view up the road behind us, i would not have expected what was going to happen.
something that seems to have confused a lot of people is what I was doing out at 1 almost 2 in the morning. im a night owl. my normal bedtime is usually 2am. we could frequently hear other college partys going until 330, 4, sometimes 5 in the morning. frequently we would hear people coming too and from said partys, frequently drunk, during all of these hours. more than once i had escorted one or more of my female roomates to rite aid, 3 blocks away, and that was as late as 4am. the wierd thing is that it was not unusual to see small children out on the street until very late at night. unsupervised. as in 4 year olds running up and down the block at 12:30 while 6 year old brother rides his bike in the street. so 1:30 is really not that late for me, or the area.
do i really need to explain why we took the cigarettes outside? oh, why didnt we go out back? to the tiny 4x12 cinderblock walled 'porch'? cause a) thats where laptop was lifted from, and b) cause going out there meant unlocking 2 rusty masterlocks on a large metal shutter outside the normal door it also had.
ok, back to the story
we sit on the front steps and smoke cigs, as we often did. make the smallest smalltalk possible with the local addict, no we dont have any money, no we dont have an extra cig for you. she wanders off. so were just sitting on the porch, and i look up the block, away from campus, and see 3 kids, maybe 15 or 16, walking torwards us. looking back, their facial expressions sent up some big red flags. i was a psych major, and one of the things i took particular intreset in was microexpressions, facial reading, body language, etc. but hindsight being 20/20 their expressions were different from the normal day to day pedestrians expression of anger and intent (not talking about students, the local community). they looked, well there wasnt really time to process that from a short glance, but the point is trust your instincts. any way as they get closer one of them asks if we have a lighter, as they walk by.
'na, left it inside' a lie, yes, but it was generally a more polite way of saying 'no go away'.
'wheres the money?' i look up from my ciggarette to look down the barrel of a small handgun. not a bb gun, not a water gun, a small calibur HANDGUN. pointed between my eyes. again 'wheres the money?' and i am only confused. the gun rotates target between my self and my roommate. my thought process is as follows: "kid has a gun. why the fuck does kid have a gun? 'wheres the fucking money?' and why does he think that 2 college kids have money? i dont have any money. i dont have anything in my pockets. except my lighter... and my gun. is he gonna check my pockets? or can i just give him the lighter and tell him thats all i have? should i give him my gun? i feel strongly like thats not an option. but what if he checks my pockets? what if he finds out i have a gun? what if hes gonna shoot me anyway?"
really it was that last thought that i decided i wasnt going to wait and find out, i wasnt about to just let myself get shot on my own fucking stoop while my gun sat in my pocket. with my left hand i reached out and tried to grab the wrist holding the fire arm thats aimed, again back at my face, and redirect it to my right, into the empty lot and away from myself and my roommate. i hear the first shot, into the empty lot next to me. holy fucking shit. from this point on i have absoloutely no idea where my smoking buddy or the other 2 bgs are. my right hand has now removed my p11 from my hoodie pocket, and bad guys writs has left my left hand. fucked. the second shot i hear, i also feel. like a metal coat hanger thats been straightend, heated til red, then poked clean through your tummy, i definately feel it, i already KNOW id been shot. but i also know that there arnt any vital organs an that area. it doesnt even hurt yet, theres no time for pain right now. ill be ok, as long as i get medical attention ASAP. almost on its own, my p11 has made its up, and i returned fire on my assailant. at this point... i cant really even... describe. what i do remember, was watching him... run? away. from here things get more... slurred, is the best way i can think to describe. he stumbled as he ran, i was pulling the trigger, and i could hear gunfire. at somepoint either with the help of roommate or theoretically on my own i turned and went inside. i do clearly remember yelling upstairs '(girlfriend)! call 911!!!' and walking up said stairs to my room. 'what!?!? why!?? what happened?!?!?'
'fucking call 911 i got shot!' as she dials i lay down just inside my bedroom door. my other roommate across the hall and her boyfriend are both still up, and dude come over, but he was way to stoned to have any idea what he should actually do. i do remember he rolled me up enough to check and see if it went clean through. it did. "good" i think, wasnt a hollow point or something like that. some blurry but probably dramatic dialog between me and girlfriend. she crys. i start to feel the pain as i repeatedly assure her im going to be fine. within probably 2 or 3 minuets theres a cop car, maybe another minute later the ambulance arrives. now im really starting to go into shock, and memory gets even worse. in my memory, i thought the paramedics carried me back down the stairs, like all of them. according to everyone else i walked down them on my own. i still think they probably carried me out the door, down the stoop stairs, but thats only because i also remember there being glass everywhere from the now shattered outter gate door. at any rate they put me on a gurney, and into the back of the ambulance theres me, my girlfriend and either 1 or 2 paramedics, and at least one guy driving (obviously). im in pretty bad shape at this point, my bodys going into shock, i feel cold, and i cant control my hands.
'squeeze my hand' i say to girlfriend, 'i need to feel something in my hand' her reply startles me slightly
'im already squeezing as hard as a can.' she looks absoloutely terrified.
'well fuck,' i say. 'sorry. hey guy,' i turn to the paramedic 'you got a pen or something i can hold? im havin trouble with my hands.' they were completely numb, the muscles responding poorly at best.
'here, this is all i got,' and he hands me a pen sized light, the kind the drug companies probably hand out at trade shows or however that particular industry works. at some point i remember the ambulance stopping, and the driver yelling something out the window. they told me later that apparantly somebody flagged to see if they could take the kid i shot, but ha, already full.
'hey dude' i turn to paramedic again 'listen. i dont really care whats really going on right now, i just need to hear you tell me im going to be ok.' he hesitates. asshole. 'oh fuck me!' girlfriend looks at him like he just personally strangled her puppy
'yea, your gonna be fine' he eventually gets out. very helpful, except for the pause.
we get to temple hospital emergency room, and at this point i only remember bits and pieces. i remember people swarming all around me. i remember my pants getting cut off. i remember a nurses finger in my rectum, and i remember her telling me to be glad it was her and her tiny fingers and not one of the male nurses. i laugh, kinda. i remember someone taking my earring, and having to take out my libret (lower lip stud) for them. i remember hearing another voice say something about getting a cathader ready. i tell that voice to wait 5 minutes til the anesthesia (which theyre already giving me) kicks in. they laugh. very happy to know that they still can. and thats the last thing i remember that night. oh, at some point along the ride girlfriend took my phone, and asked me if she shoud call my mother. i tell her no. got yelled at for that actually. of course thats still the first call she tried to make, and i get why, but in my mind, i was gonna be ok, i didnt see a reason to wake her up at 2 am and stress her out while theres still nothing she could do. anyway, anesthesia kicks in and im out. im told later that the surgery lasted about 6 hours or so.
some details i want in this first post. i fucked up. big time. i was carrying my kel-tec p11. good. was loaded/chambered, etc. great. it was brand new. like, hadnt been broken it yet new. not great. mid grade copper jacket target ammo. not sure which one did it, but according to the cops, it jammed on the third round. not sure what order it happened, but i put one round through bad guys leg, and another through his chest, collapsing his lung. roommate had to ID him before they took him to surgery, kid was havin spasms and coughing up blood. oh, also, roommate with me on the stoop had just come home from work. he had $500 in cash in his pocket.
ok so thats the first part. im working on the second at the moment actually, should have it up later tonight/tomorrow, not sure yet if itll be the last or if ill need one more. last thing i wanna say before i do that is another big thanks to everyone who offered ammo and drinks, there are a couple reasons you havnt really heard much from me. first, as a general rule i try not to allow my address to float across the www. second the sheer generosity overwhelmed me. i dont generally ask for much, nor do i generally expect much from people. which suits me, i generally like to earn my keep. seeing so much support from so many was... well i thank you again, and i may eventually take up some of the offers, but they wont really do me any good without my gun. check back for pt 2, hospital, court, and where my gun is now (hint, i dont have it).

Re: the story of my shootout
Wow. That was riveting. I've never been so glued to a post while reading anything on this forum...EVER. Holy shit, man. The jamming on third shot is alarming though. This story has me thinking about what I'm carrying when I gotta go to Philly for work.
