M&P Shield - Sending back
I am not sure what is up with our new Shield 9mm but after 2nd time out we noticed the crown? (the flat end) of the barrel has numerous silver glints on it (i cannot explain well but as it the black coating is coming off in spots) It is small so we may not have noticed after the 1st cleaning. We have shot just under 200 rounds through it. It is not lead coating it. A fellow shooter alerted me to some problems with his friends Shield which is why i examined it closer.
My full size M&P looks perfect - all black still and its over a year old and lost of ammo through it.
I cannot err on side of (its just cosmetic) as I really don't know that for sure and don't want to take any chances. Either the coating was done hastily as perhaps they are trying to hard to fill the orders, or the barrel is substandard?
It shoots ok and used only full metal jackets though it. Huge disappointment to have it less than a week!
Curious if anyone else has had this happen to theirs.

Re: M&P Shield - Sending back
got any pics? I noticed a little discoloration on mine, but it doesn't look like the finish is worn off or anything (I think!)

Re: M&P Shield - Sending back
I've only had mine for 5 days and 50 rounds. I'll look at it tonight when I go home.
I'd like to see a pic.

A little blurry on my screen, but I can see where it is shiny.

Re: M&P Shield - Sending back
No offense, but if it was anywhere else on the pistol I'd agree there was a problem. However, right next to the muzzle like that -- IMO it's a tough environment and some change in appearance or degradation of finish is to be expected.
Sorta like a new vehicle owner saying that they've driven the vehicle 50 miles and the tire treads are dirty and appear to be worn a little.
No flame, JMO. I think it's a but much to expect a firearm muzzle to not have a change in appearance over time with use. Maybe there is a problem, and OTOH maybe the finish on the Shield is different from that on the standard M&P.

I completely agree with you - if they all do this, then I am fine with it. But...S&W has no idea why the change from black.
This makes me concerned and feel its worth sending back for my own piece of mind (husbands also!)
