Grand Forks Police Startled by Loud `Bang` After Dropped Ammo
    3/5/2008
A freak accident is how Grand Forks police describe what happened in the law enforcement center lobby this morning.

Police say that shortly after 10 a.m., they heard a loud "bang," that startled both officers and others inside.

Captain Kerwin Kjelstrom says a man who walked into the department`s lobby to sign an agreement for using the department`s firing range dropped a box of ammunition, and one of the rounds went off.

Kjelstrom says there was no damage, but it caused quite a stir when people heard what they thought was a round of gunshots being fired in the police department lobby.

Kjelstrom says the round was a .45 caliber and no one was hurt. The man who dropped the ammo was interviewed and released.

It can happen. It happened on our range one time when a shooter dropped a mag. It'll get your attention, but no real danger, except for eyes...and your underwear.

I always told my Mom if I'm that scared having clean underwear won't be happening at all because I'd have shit my pants anyway.

I learned the hard way when I tossed a couple of .22lr rnds towards my work bench and they didn't make it, one of them went off when it hit the floor BOOM!!!!!!!!!

My girlfriend and her friend weren't to happy with me about the loud crack that scared the hell out of them.

something about sprayed in primers on .22's that makes them real dangerous when dropped, tossed , or thrown

Or the ones with spitzer tips use a polymer tip. Hornady has developed ammo for tube fed lever rifles with a tip that won't cause the primer in front of it to ignite.

In a box of ammo.......very rare.

Dropping a round on loose stones.....uncommon, but it can happen.

Not real dangerous if you wear eye protection.

Agreed, it cant get any muzzle pressure to go anywhere.
