    Default Old old old springfield

I have been sitting on this gun since my grandfather died and have never really touched it. From what I have gathered its a Springfield Armory - U.S. Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle. I don't know anything about them. Anyone tell me about them?

Its definitely from the civil war.

It has the serial number 1863 on the side where it says U.S. Springfield. The receiver has 1866 on it which worries me, and I can't find a serial number in the barrel.

I'm probably asking the wrong crowd, but you all are super resourceful and so helpful, maybe someone knows something?

Might I suggest picking up an issue of Guns And Ammo and write to thier identity and value section.

I may just do that. It needs some love. I don't even know if It's worth the money to restore it. It's pitted, and a lil beat up. Course, it WAS in a war!

Got an issue right here, Email G&A at Gunsandammo@primedia.com.

Says personal replies arew not possible, but you may see something in an issue, meanwhile I'll see what I can dig up.

I will put up detailed pics of everything I own as soon as i can get a hold of a digital camera. This is killing me not to be able to share my small collection with you all. They're my babies and I wanna show em off!

Sorry, but the Model 1868 Springfield Trapdoor was post-Civil War (which ended in April 1865).

Those are .50 caliber rifles, used during the Indian Wars until the 45-70 Springfields were issued around 1873. Hope that helps.
