Gun Bluing

Just wanted to see if anyone has had any good results with some of the bluing products out there. I've used birchwood Casey cold blue with mixed results. I've heard Vans makes a decent products, but I just wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks

I heard some good stuff about Oxpho-blue. I tried using the BC stuff and while it looked decent, it basically rubs right off. I'm working on a 22 mag and after I get the barrel looking the way I want, I will be trying the Oxpho-blue. If that doesn't work, I may try using some kind of dura-coat or the like.

I'm going to try Oxpho-Blue next, I've heard good things. Vans is pretty crappy overall. I've had mixed results with it - but none were overly impressive.

Cold blue is ok for touch-ups but pretty disappointing for large areas. It's not really "bluing", but a copper wash that oxidizes blackish.

IMHO, ceracote, send it out for hot blue, or try your hand at cold rust blue.

I have done multiple pistols with Oxpho Blue. It's very easy to work with, and seems to hold up VERY well. It does not, however, produce as deep and dark a blue as Brownells' Dichropan or a couple of their other products -- but it holds up far better.

In fact, I'm about to head down to the basement to Oxpho Blue the receiver of what will most likely become my next everyday carry pistol.

I've moved towards parkerizing over bluing these days... I just feel it's a tougher finish and it soaks up oil like no tomorrow... Every other month I throw my 1911 in a gallon zip-loc bag and hose it with some Break-Free CLP, let it sit overnight, take it out, and it's perfectly fine. Rain, snow, oil from my hand, nothing touches it. And parking a gun is simple for me, because I'm stupid... lol

i have used briechwood on small stuff but i got a mod.10 that the side plate was pretty bad with surface rust so i tried to do it with the cold blue, after getting the metal rust free and buffed (the most importent part) i went at it with the biechwood cold blue, after many attemps with no success, i heated the plate up to where it was hot but you could still touch it, that did work better but it is not as deep as a good hot bluing is.
