Alot of older people don't trust banks. Seeing the news reports about corruption from certain banks involving mortgages and stories about people being arrested for spending their own money, having accounts cleaned out, etc., I don't blame them. Couple that with the NIMBY ( not in my back yard) attitude, and it doesn't seem all that strange. That being said, it certainly is a foolish idea to keep that sort of money in the house.
I'm willing to bet the crime can be linked to a conspiracy involving a family member or friend. Someone had to tell the perp that all of that money was in the guy's safe. If I knew someone got a legal settlement, the safe in the bedroom is the last place I would think to look for it.

    This is curious: http://lancasteronline.com/article/l...of-minors.html

I'm wondering if that kind of activity was happening before the man was murdered, and the guy that killed him knew about the money after one of the kids that was partying there talked.

all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

My line of thinking went the same direction when I saw this article. If this type of thing was going on before, its a safe bet that's how the info got out.
