what should I expect to pay for a....
savage axis or the axis xp in .223.... went to dick's they only had camo in both in stock. I want synthetic black so they'd have to order it. They told me 379 for the xp and 309 for the axis. I thought they were actually decent prices. Opinions? I didn't buy one because I was unsure if it was a good deal or not. A guy at work told me he saw an xp at a smaller locally owned gun shop for about $475 whats a decent price for these savages? I have no idea about the savage guns, never owned or dabbled in the make.
also, is the scope worth the extra money or should I just buy my own and mount it?

The Beauty of the 2nd Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

if your considering this purchase for a hunting rifle or a good beginners gun i won,t try to change your mind. now if this is gun for a experience hunter, shooter you may want to go to a more advanced model with better features. yes the cost going in will be higher but ultimately will be cheaper than modifying the axis. this is coming from a savage fan fwiw. as far as scopes go buy your own. i have yet to see real quality in the scopes offered on package deals. good luck shopping. the savage platform is a great underrated rifle. affordable, accurate, reliable, modifiable what more can you ask for.

I have my .308 for hunting. I just want something with a little less kick that I can use on the range all day, and maybe hunt with if I feel the need.

Knowing what dealer cost is, the $475 price at the small shop is highway robbery verging on an unthinkable % markup.
There is about a $20 difference in dealer cost between the Axis and the scoped XP.
If I were looking, I would never pay more than $300 OTD for an Axis and not more than $350 OTD for the XP.
