I think something like this would be useful.

Re: York City Police Department to Deploy Automatic License Plate Scanners
The ALPR are the wave of the future, more and more PD's are using them, let's face it folks, like it or not, big brother is (and has been) here and it will only get worse.
Cherry Hill, NJ police phasing in new cruisers .....
“And,” said the chief, “we’ll have license plate readers coming in for the cars real soon.”

Re: York City Police Department to Deploy Automatic License Plate Scanners
I can tell the York Daily Record has been paying attention to our efforts to educate people on the privacy implications of the devices for the last year. Here's their editorial:

Re: York City Police Department to Deploy Automatic License Plate Scanners
Read the spec's on this relatively inexpensive device that's meant for small businesses.

Now, imagine what a government agency can afford to implement.
Also, RFID tags are not powered by an external source, they're RFID, they're powered by the EM radiation of the reader. That's why they have them that can be implanted in dogs and people. No batteries required.Last edited by streaker69; August 8th, 2012 at 10:27 PM.

Re: York City Police Department to Deploy Automatic License Plate Scanners
You're both right and wrong. By "External power source" I was referring to the EM radiation put off by the reader, not a battery or having it plugged in to a wall.
Now that particular reader you mentioned is made for active RFID tags. Tags which *are* powered by an internal lithium-ion battery and do transmit an active signal.

The type of RFID tags that they could put on a license plate would still be limited to the inactive variety put in pets and such as you noted. However, even with a really awesome antenna, you are still limited to maybe a foot or two range under the best of conditions.
