traveling to IL
hey guys and gals, at the end of the month, i have to go to Illinios for a week. i don't want to drive through i80 at night unarmed (in the event that i need to pull over to get gas at night). but since IL isn't gun friendly, what can i do? can i disassemble my gun before i leave Pa and put each part in a different compartment, when i get into Pa i can reassemble (or is that a big NO NO)
thanks
ps i only have my pa ltcf and sorry if this post is in the wrong sectionLast edited by TaurusPT140; August 6th, 2012 at 08:34 PM.

Re: traveling to IL
I would go with OC spray and a 4 D cell Maglite. As far as i can tell, the only restriction in IL with spray is discharging it in an "enclosed room". http://www.peacemakerpepperspray.com/page/894784
Check out The Pepper Spray Store in Bethlehem. 595 Main Street, 18018. They have like over 50 kinds.
PA has reciprocity with IN but not OH. FOPA would not cover you in OH because your destination prohibits you.

Re: traveling to IL
The gun has to be unloaded in a case and in the trunk. The ammo stored separately.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

Re: traveling to IL
There is more detail at the Illinois State Police web site at http://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/transgun0-000.pdf. In some ways Pennsylvania is more restrictive than even Illinois. Transporting handguns is one of those ways. But steer clear of Chicago -- Illinois does not have preemption.

Re: traveling to IL
I may stand corrected. I read IL and only thought Cook County.

thanks guys rep inbound
@Armor Snail.. i do carry OC spray. some might disagree with me on this but 99% of the time OC spray will take care of the situation. but just by having your boom stick on you for the other 1% helps make the other 99% feels a whole lot better

Re: traveling to IL
I'm thinking bad idea for a couple of reasons.
This is the state police site. http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm
Notice it says
There is more than one way to legally transport a firearm. However, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, it is recommended all firearms be transported:
1. Unloaded, 2. Enclosed in a case and, 3. By persons who have a valid FOID card.
It seems you need a FOID card to transport a firearm.
Also notice in the PDF posted by donm, it says you need a FOID card to transport amunition.
The website above also state that there is not preemption in Illinois. So my take on that is you need to know the laws of every town you are going through. Do you want to take the chance that you will get pulled over in some town that has some crazy firearm law that can put you in jail.
My take on a quick read of Illinois law. I could be reading things wrong. I would learn everything you can and make sure you know what the laws there are, not think you know what the laws are.
Enjoy your trip.

Stay home. Pay for the in-laws to come see you.
