Don't forget also that Lautenberg retired from the Senate and came back when it was learned by polls that the Democrat candidate was going to be drubbed by the Republican. The legit Dem candidate quit (after the state's legal date to withdraw) and Lautenberg stepped in to fill the gap. All in what can be best termed and "extra-legal" move since there was no primary and the dates for withdrawals and new candidates had passed.
