    Default 1911 ambi safety removal.

I have been having a problem with the safety coming off when carrying my full size Kimber 1911. I blame the right side of the ambi safety rubbing against my holster when I bend over or sit down. If I simply remove the right side will it still function and not come off or do I actually need to get a non ambi safety lever? Thanks, B

You will need to fit a regular safety

If it's a tongue and fork style safety you can simply tighten up the fork......

Most of the ambi-safeties I have seen are the enhanced or extended type. I would think you could grind and reshape the right side to make it less obtrusive, snag free but still usable. Kind of like a mirror version of the original small safety.

Before you start modding your thumb safety.....

    1. Check the plunger tube spring. Make sure it is properly putting pressure on the thumb safety. It should take some effort to engage and dis-engage the thumb safety. You should feel some effort in using the safety. If it is too light, the spring may need to be changed.

    2. Check the mating surfaces on the thumb safety, and where it engages the sear. Do this with the grip safety removed. You should see metal to metal contact with the safety engaged. Any high spots, un even contact surfaces, or light is a warning that the thumb safety was not properly done.

    3. If you have access to a different holster, see if that helps. Test it with the pistol confirmed empty. Holster may be at fault, not the safety.

I had a similar problem. I bought a new conventional single ( left side) safety.
I feel much better about the safety staying on until _ I _ decide to move it to fire.

Kind of an important feature on a 1911, that one.
