Default Rifle / shotgun need to be cased?

    Just a quick question,
Do I need to keep my rifle or shotgun in a gun case while driving to and from
where I am hunting? I know that they need to be unloaded, but cased?
I would like to know what the PGC codes state I guess.
Thanks to all who have the time to answer.

I was curious too, so I looked it up in PA Title 18, Section 6106.b.8... you are NOT breaking the law if:

"(8) Any person while carrying a firearm which is not
loaded and is in a secure wrapper
    from the place of purchase
to his home or place of business... (there are a whole lot of other to-and-froms listed)"

    http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/pennsylvania.pdf

The PGC's General Hunting Regs only seem to make reference to loaded guns not being in or on vehicles, and from what I can see, nothing about "secure wrappers."

    What constitutes a "secure wrapper?"

I would think the minimum would be whatever the gun store gives you when you buy a rifle, which right now is a gun sock.

I throw my rifle or shotgun in the back seat in plain view. I'm going from my house to the place I hunt, it isn't like I'm stopping off at Walmart or grabbing food... I've had the bunny cops see me, never have they said anything to me...

Same with me, particularly if I just put 100+ through the shotgun busting clays. Cool it down on the seat. But at least we know what the law says.

18 Pa CS 6106(b)(8) has nothing to do with hunting.

Other than a requirement that it be unloaded while in a vehicle I'm unaware of any casing requirement under state statute or Game Commission Regulations (058 Pa Code Part III).

There is no gun case law in Pennsylvania.

The statute refers only to "firearms." Does it clarify somewhere else? Do the PGC's General Hunting Regs trump Title 18?

6106(b)(8) is not restricted to 'firearms' in the s.6102 sense (handguns, SBSs, SBRs) but includes longarms:

    6106(e) Definitions.--
    (1) For purposes of subsection (b)(3), (4), (5), (7) and
(8), the term "firearm" shall include any weapon which is
designed to or may readily be converted to expel any
projectile by the action of an explosive or the frame or
    receiver of the weapon.
The reason it is inapplicable is because there's nothing in (b)(8)'s language that references travel for hunting - reread all the origin/destination points listed therein.

No - regulations, in and of themselves, do not trump state statutes - it's the other way around.
