Default Optic for a 30-30 Marlin

I currently have a Bushnell 3x9 on it and really don't like it. I am good with the 3x9 and would go with a 2x7 also but need some advice as to what is more optimal for the 30-30. I will most likely go with a Nikon but I'm new to the lever action game and need a good optic for hunting this year.

    Personally, I'd go with a straight 2x. 7x or 9x just seems like overkill on a 30-30.

I like to see stuff more up close. I like the x9 but the one I have now is tuned back to 6-7 all the time.

If you really want to stay with a 3-9 try a Leupold Ultralight. It's a 3-9 but only a 33 mm objective lens, much smaller than the 42 mm lens that is probably on your current 3-9.

There are some 1.75-6 scopes, 2.5-8 and of course 2-7 around from various makers. Weaver has a 1.5-5.

What about a fixed 6X? I've had one on my 270 for 30 years. Or as mentioned, a 4X, I've had one on a Savage 99 for 35 years.

Look around, I usually use Bear Basin or SWFA for 'window shopping'.

I've been comparing scopes all day and have decided on 2. Both Nikon either the Buckmaster 3-9 or the Pro Staff 2-7. I think either way I'm good and covered but what is your opinions on the two?

Both of my friends that run with lever action 30-30's swear by a fixed 4 power scope based on where we hunt. You will rarely shoot more than 150 yards. Most of the time it's 100 or less.

Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

That's what we use.. Old Redfields locked in at 4x.

Unless your hunting in fields you shouldn't need more zoom than that in my opinion.

Of the 2 you mention, I'd go with the 2-7. It's lighter and smaller than the 3-9. My son's 30-06 wore a 2-7 Nikon Prostaff Shotgun hunter for a couple of years, it worked fine.

These work exceptionally well for me, and I'm halfway to 116:
