    Default Mosin barrel shortening

Anyone able to shorten a 91/30 mosin barrel? Need it about 22 in long. Just makin a brush rifle and it's too long and doesn't look right with the stock I have. I'd do it myself, but if anyone's done it before I'd rather let it up to them. Thanks

I've been thinking the same thing. Just the cost comes into mind. Is it really worth it? to have a gunsmith do it? or could we do it at home, for alot less? Hummmm?!..

I imagine you can get a cheap used shotty for just a little more than paying a gunsmith to shorten it. So, I'd say you should do it yourself (if it's legal) or get a cheap shotty.

Sure you could just cut it off but if you don't recrown the barrel it will affect accuracy. You can shorten to 22 inches thread the end of the barrel recrown and add a nice muzzle brake and you will have an easy shooting carbine style rifle. I have done 4 with Sean at CDI. Yes it will cost some cash but the end result works out well . On three of then we added scopes The 4th actually has a
Israeli K-98 front sight post with a mosin nagant modified rear sight. I like mosin but not the recoil so with the addition of an Ar Benny Cooley compensator and a rubber buttplate I acn shoot all day without killing my shoulder. Brian / EFR

If I remember correctly there's a tutorial on this on Midway's website. Check it out and I bet you can be convinced to give it a go yourself.

M44s are showing up again at shows and some dealers. They run around $240. Might be less effort to just buy one instead of shortening barrel, stock, and replacing sights.

I own a Izevsk arsenal 91/30, and a Tula arsenal both which I have shortened myself. However, upon shortening the Izevesk model, I found that the bore was not centered in the barrel, although, when I first began the project, it appeared to be ok. Just a word of caution. Shortened to 20".
I am about to mount a scope on the Ivensk model, so I don't know how the rifle will repond. Not well, I'm afraid.
The Tula model was the short carbine Model 38, cut off just behind the front sight, and scoped out. It shoots right on the money.
I shortened both without a lathe, Just used a hacksaw, a 12" square, a file, and a lot of patience.
Both will be great bush rifles, at least, if the Izevsk model works out.

Bama man is absolutely correct you will find that many mosins are bored off center. The russians did not take their time or have the capabilty to produce precision bolt action rifles these were set up for mass production. Brian / EFR
