    Default Allentown Gun buy back

    ALLENTOWN, Pa. -
Your unwanted guns are worth some big bucks at Kmart.

Allentown will hold a gun buy-back program on Saturday at St. Luke's Evangelical Church on North 7th Street.

If you turn in a gun, you'll get a $100 Kmart gift card.

The buy-back will help make the streets safer, police said.

"If we were able to develop a panacea, we wouldn't want any illegal guns on the street and any unregistered guns, so this is just a small step toward that," said Asst. Chief Joe Hanna, Allentown Police Dept.

To participate in the gun buy-back program, take your unloaded firearm, along with photo identification or two forms of non-photo ID, to the church between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday

I know a lot of guys that have made some great deals hanging out in the parking lots of the gun shows.

I think it's a great idea. Afterall, you know what the competition is offering.

That is taken care of via an exception:

    (8) Any person while carrying a firearm which is not loaded and is in a secure wrapper from the place of purchase to his home or place of business, or to a place of repair, sale or appraisal or back to his home or place of business ...

So just what is the cash value of a KMart $100 gift card on the street? I'd start the offer at $50 cash for any guns of interest. You know they'll get folks there that would rather have cash than a store gift card.

This is different than other buy backs where it is a no questions ask affair.. This one wants you to bring ID??

Too much going on this weekend to attend this one.

The ID requirement is not unusual. To qualify you usually have to prove you are a resident of the jurisdiction sponsoring the buyback. In this case you probably have to be an Allentown resident.

I did a college internship many years ago with Harrisburg City Police Dept and they ran two buyback programs at the time. During the first one they paid a lot of money for junk guns turned in by non city residents. They learned from the first one and required proof of ID during the secone buy back.

With that said... I saw many officers pick up guns cheap by asking folks to come back after hours with the promise of a better deal.

The majority of the guns turned in were junk (rusted, old Iver Johnson revolvers, non operational, etc...) Most of the operational guns were limited to single shot H&Rs and cheap .22s There were a few guys that picked up some nice ones.
